The M365 Backup Gap
Microsoft's Service Level Agreement Guarantees Availability, Not Your Data

Microsoft guarantees 99.9% M365 uptime. They do not guarantee your data. Accidental deletion — by a user or an administrator — is not covered by Microsoft's native retention beyond 30 to 93 days depending on the workload. Ransomware that encrypts files in OneDrive will replicate those encrypted versions to SharePoint. Legal holds are not the same as backup. Microsoft themselves recommend third-party backup for M365 data.
