Russian Hacker Sentenced to 6.75 Years in U.S. for Orchestrating $9 Million Ransomware Scheme

Updated: 1 day ago

A 26-year-old Russian national, Aleksei Olegovich Volkov, has been sentenced to 6.75 years (81 months) in prison by a U.S. court for his involvement in facilitating major cybercrime groups, including the Yanluowang ransomware crew. Volkov acted as an initial access broker, breaching networks and selling that access to ransomware actors who then extorted victims.

Russian Hacker Sentenced to 6.75 Years in U.S. for Orchestrating $9 Million Ransomware Scheme

Key Takeaways

  • Volkov pleaded guilty in November 2025 and was extradited to the U.S. from Italy in January 2024.

  • His actions led to over $9 million in actual losses and more than $24 million in intended losses for U.S. companies and organizations.

  • He will pay over $9 million in restitution and forfeit the tools used in the crimes.

The Hacker's Modus Operandi

Volkov specialized in gaining unauthorized access to computer networks, often by exploiting vulnerabilities. He then sold this access to other criminal organizations, primarily ransomware groups. These groups would deploy malware to encrypt victims' data, crippling their operations and demanding substantial ransoms, sometimes in the tens of millions of dollars, in cryptocurrency. Volkov received a share of the illicit proceeds from every successful ransom payment.

Charges and Restitution

Volkov faced multiple charges, including unlawful transfer of a means of identification, trafficking in access information, access device fraud, aggravated identity theft, computer fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. As part of his guilty plea, Volkov has agreed to provide full restitution to victims, with a minimum of $9,167,198 designated for actual losses. He will also forfeit the tools used in his criminal activities.

Related Developments in Ransomware Enforcement

This sentencing occurs amidst broader efforts by U.S. prosecutors to dismantle ransomware operations. In a related development, a third individual, Angelo Martino, has been charged for his role as a ransomware negotiator for the BlackCat (ALPHV) gang. Martino allegedly helped the group extort higher payouts from at least 10 victims. Authorities have seized nearly $9.2 million in various cryptocurrencies, luxury vehicles, and properties linked to Martino. Two other individuals involved as BlackCat affiliates, Ryan Clifford Goldberg and Kevin Tyler Martin, have already pleaded guilty.
