RoguePilot Vulnerability in GitHub Codespaces Allowed Copilot to Leak Sensitive Tokens

The attack is a form of passive or indirect prompt injection, where malicious instructions are hidden within content processed by a large language model (LLM). In this case, the LLM is GitHub Copilot, and the content is a GitHub issue. This is also described as an AI-mediated supply chain attack.

Exploiting Codespaces and Copilot Features

GitHub Codespaces offers various entry points for launching a development environment, including templates, repositories, commits, pull requests, and issues. The vulnerability specifically targets the scenario where a Codespace is opened from an issue. The built-in GitHub Copilot is automatically fed the issue's description, which can be weaponized.
